Pathways into Retail Pays off

  • The first of our Pathways into Retail participants receive their certificates for taking part in the programme
  • Both men undertook month-long work placements and learned about their own skills and development

We enjoy letting people see the hard work carried out by the people who come to work with us on our programmes.

Our Pathways to Retail course was a new programme launched in 2017. The aim of the programme was to support learners in raising their confidence and aspirations to assist in a transition into working in the retail sector.

The group originally had four participants who were referred through Cosgrove Care, a charity which is a leading source of support for children and adults with additional learning needs and disabilities in East Renfrewshire and the wider Glasgow area.

The two young men pictured took part in a 14-week programme, one day each week with Young Enterprise Scotland.

Paul Corbally and Martin Hamilton

However as time went on, we realised through the various elements of the Pathways course that Paul was more interested in a career in office administration - while Martin was interested in landscaping and currently volunteers with Locavore.

They spent five weeks working on understanding their skills and qualities and updating their CVs with Young Enterprise Scotland's Pathways Programme Executive Catriona Smith.

In addition Anna Devitt, from Direct Devitt, delivered an hour long workshop each week based on her qualification, Comedy and Confidence.

The learners then took part in a four week work placement; Paul at Cosgrove Care and Martin, here at Young Enterprise Scotland. The final four weeks we completed the SQA employability unit; Preparing for Employment First Steps.

The photo shows the last day where the learners achieved their certificates both for Comedy and Confidence and Pathways to Retail.

Paul is going onto to do a course with Anna Devitt; The Stand Up program and Martin is continuing with Locavore.
