60-Second Interview

What three words would you use to describe your Company Programme experience?
Rewarding, eye-opening and unforgettable
In more detail, tell us about your journey.
I was part of Kirkwall Grammar School’s Estrela team, which produced colour changing LED lamps featuring iconic Orkney landmarks (find out more at www.estrelaorkney.co.uk). I joined the team later on after another member dropped out, and was head of HR, but the whole team was mostly preoccupied with production as we had sizeable demand for our lamps. This, coupled with academic and extra-curricular commitments, forced me to improve my time management skills, and gave me a great insight into the commitment required to run a business successfully.
How do you feel the Company Programme helped you prepare for life after school?
Having never really considered a future in business, the Company Programme presented me with the opportunity to try something new, and now enterprise is something I really have an interest in. The kind of skills that running your own business requires, especially one which met with as much success as Estrela has, are invaluable in whatever you decide to do in life.
What has your journey been like post-school?
I am a first year law student at the University of Dundee, and I am also continuing with Estrela: it’s an exciting time for the company and there are so many new opportunities and challenges on the horizon!
What advice would you give to anyone setting out on this journey?
Organise early! It is far better to over-prepare than to get swamped by the challenges you can face in the running of a business. Also put yourselves out there! Be proud of what you do and take every opportunity to get out and promote your company and your product.
