60-Second Interview

What three words would you use to describe your Company Programme experience?
Enlightening, exciting and profitable.
In more detail, tell us about your journey (what was your product/what was your role/learning experiences)
My YE journey started some time ago (30 years if I am honest). This was in the very early days of any type of enterprise activity being recognised in Scottish Schools. The opportunity was given to my school to join with another local school to form a joint enterprise using the Company Programme.

I was the lone soldier from my school who signed up. I became the Marketing Director of the company that was formed. Our product was ‘Multi-Purpose Joke Book’, with the target audience being our peers. It came in at a profitable 50p and I think we sold out!
How do you feel the Company Programme helped you prepare for life after school?
It really emphasised both team and hard work! It also convinced me that marketing wasn’t the flash and creative department that I thought it was and steered my career path away from that sector.
What has your journey been like post-school? (University/Employment/life experiences)
My journey has had many twists and turns but I wouldn’t change a thing. I gained an Honours Degree and worked in the private sector for a number of years. My entrepreneurial awareness through YE Scotland did give me the tools required to start my own Warehouse and Distribution Business some years back which I sold before moving into the Third Sector.
What advice would you give to anyone setting out on this journey?
Just Do It!
