Professor Sir Jim McDonald
As well as Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde, Professor Sir Jim McDonald holds a number of directorships with some of Scotland’s leading companies, making him an ideal ambassador for Young Enterprise Scotland.
With an engineering background and a deep knowledge of how new technologies are impacting the workplace, he is also much sought after by government and public institutions for his insights into the skills development of our young people and how education connects to business.
“There are personal attributes that young people should be aware of as they enter the world of work, as employers routinely make judgements on how an individual will fit and contribute to their organisations,” he says. “These would include enthusiasm, a clear interest in the type of business being considered, self-discipline, the development of a good work ethic in applying themselves and an openness to develop professional relationships. In education we can support young peoples’ preparation best by partnering with business, industry and organisations such as YES to enthuse and inspire them to see their personal development and life opportunities as entwined with the careers they choose to pursue.”
Recognising that with the continuing acceleration of digital technology young people must also learn the skills to thrive in a dynamically changing work environment, he adds that education and industry must develop and co-invest in a shared vision to build opportunities for our young people.
“Achieving a strong balance between formal education provision and training opportunities helps satisfy this business and industry demand and can excite more young people into pursuing careers in emerging sectors and those undergoing digital change.”
Our Vision is for Scotland to be a place where all young people are given the opportunity to have a rewarding future in work and life - no matter where they start their journey.
Our Mission is to inspire and equip young people, irrespective of their background, to learn, develop and reach their full potential through enterprise education.
In everything that we do, we will work with the following values: Integrity, Enthusiasm, Creativity & Collaboration.
