Young Enterprise Company Programme Finals 2017

  • Our team Vision competed against 13 other teams to be crowned HSBC Best Company of the Year

Last Thursday, YE Scotland travelled down to London with our Scottish Finalists Vision.

Vision from Fortrose Academy

After breezing through our finals at the beginning of June, the next stage was the UK Finals at the British Film Institute Southbank, supported by HSBC. This was a hugely important part of Vision's journey - as the young people were competing alongside another 13 teams for a place in the European finals this week.

However, it was a tough day. All teams needed to be at the BFI for 5 AM in order to set up their trade stalls and get raring to go.

This was hard going, however it was definitely brightened by the arrival of BBC Breakfast presented Ben Thompson, who chatted both on-screen and off-screen with each of the teams.

Young Enterprise alumni turned BBC business presenter Steph McGovern hosted the evening, alongside multi-award winning young entrepreneur Ben Towers - named Number One on The Times Magazine Superteen Power List.

The team created waterproof, tear proof, durable notepads. The judges were blown away by the teams targeted marketing and professional business model.

With the level of commitment each member of the team has put into VenturePad, winning the Final quite simply means everything to us.

There were fourteen teams representing regions across the UK, competing for eight awards. The teams had each gone through a rigorous series of local and area finals to reach the UK Final.

Young Enterprise

The Company Programme is Young Enterprise's flagship enterprise education programme. Young people set up and run a business, or social enterprise, for an academic year guided by local business mentors. The winners of the UK Final go on to represent the UK at the European Final later in July in Brussels.

The Journey Award which recognises the achievements of students on the Company Programme was awarded to Jack Davy Dupris from Mary Seacole Housing Association in the East of England.

Jack now believes in himself and his goals in life have grown through Young Enterprise. He is more independent and determined to make a positive future for himself.

Nicole Christophi, Mary Seacole

The calibre of students who took part in this year's competition has been very impressive, and it wouldn't surprise me if it leads to some of these students becoming the entrepreneurs and business leaders of the future.
Not only have they come up with some excellent business ideas, they have also shown dedication, hunger and genuine business acumen.

The Young Enterprise scheme is a great way for youngsters to gain invaluable experience in the word of business in a fun yet educational way.

Ian Stuart, CEO UK, HSBC

Coinciding with this year's event Young Enterprise has produced a new research report based on the insights of 200 regional finalists. The report, entitled Robot Revolution: The impact of artificial intelligence on entrepreneurs and job prospects found that young entrepreneurs are concerned that the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in the workplace could impact job prospects.

I'd like to congratulate the students from Venturepad for winning HSBC Young Enterprise Company of the Year Award. The award has been generously supported by HSBC who like Young Enterprise, firmly believe developing creativity and employability skills can have a real impact on young people's futures.

You don't get this stuff from a text book and we are greatly encouraged by our research which shows that 94% of Company alumni go on to education, employment or training -7% higher than the national average
