Enter the Dragons Den

Young Enterprise Scotland (YES) works with young people between five and 25 to give them business skills to reach their full potential. The group have a grant of £841,396 from BIG Scotland to work with youngsters in Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Central Belt to help give them practical employability skills and an understanding of how business works.Over the past six months, twenty young people aged between 11 and 16 have been taking part in a training programme designed to help them develop confidence, employability skills and experience of creating, planning and running their own business. Their hard work of recent weeks came to fruition last week at a very special Dragon’s Den event where the young people gave business presentations about their experience of the course, the highs and lows they faced and what they have learned and gained from the experience. One of the companies, Jolly J’s, was set up and run by a group of schoolchildren who set up a tuck shop in their school last August. They conducted market research and ran a very successful marketing campaign in the school to publicise their business and made £140 profit on the initial start up costs of £100. Joanna Healy, Delivery Officer at YES, said, 'It’s been absolutely fantastic to see the growth in these young people throughout the programme. It wasn’t all easy and there were struggles at times but the way they have overcome each challenge makes me very proud of them. The young people’s enthusiasm has shone through and the biggest impact has been on their confidence. After swearing blind they wouldn’t be able to do the presentations and being nervous about standing up in front of peers and staff, they have handled the pressure very well and you can clearly see the increase in confidence they have in themselves and their abilities.”
