Our Pathways Programmes team recently launched their Climate Challenge Fund project.
A movie morning was organised in the ARC for families in Auchenback.
East Renfrewshire council is carrying out locality planning work in Auchenback, working with community members who have formed a locality planning steering group.
The Auchenback Active board and the steering group worked together to deliver this free event on Sunday 2 July in the ARC
The film shown was Home from Dreamworks, the idea for a Community Cinema was identified as being quite engaging as there is no access to cinema locally, and the expense can be a barrier.
Kids were treated to free ice-cream and snacks while their parents had the opportunity to share their views on what it's like living in Auchenback.
Young people were also entertained by staff from Voluntary Action at a craft table using recycled materials.
After their movie, families were treated to a bowl of soup made from ingredients grown at our Rouken Glen Centre, courtesy of Locavore. We gave the ingredients and recipes for the soup to the residents so they are now able to make their own.
There were also sachets of herbs made up from the YES herb garden at the ARC, while The Real Junk Food Project came along with intercepted food from Wholefoods, this was also given away to the families.
We managed to save a total of 29Kg of food from going to landfill!
Pathways Programme manager Maxine McFarlane explained that the families in Auchenback will benefit from the CCF project in a few areas.
They will have access to fresh produce from our new growing area in Auchenback, this will reduce cost for them and provide healthier options. They will be encouraged to think differently about how they shop - shopping locally reduces C02 emissions.
The interception of food leftover from supermarkets will reduce the amount of produce going to landfill. In addition to this, the creation of a community garden in Auchenback will bring the residents together and form a hub where there will be activities for families to enjoy.
A further three CCF events are scheduled to continue to encourage residents to become involved .
