Environmentally aware youngsters are ‘buzzing’ about entrepreneurship

  • YES is home to house up to 40,000 bees at the one time.
  • Outdoor learning is a huge benefit to young people
  • Are bees are the original entrepreneurs?

Children from a Glasgow primary school visited Young Enterprise Scotland (YES) for an outdoor learning experience with a twist.

YES' base at Rouken Glen was a hive of activity as pupils from Castleton primary school visited to learn more about the environment and in particular, the lifecycle of bees.

The organisation currently has one live bee hive which can house up to 40,000 bees at the one time.

The primary three youngsters were learning of buzz-iness, entrepreneurship and nature, with bee suits allowing them to get up close with the bees.

The aim of the bee hives is to encourage young people to learn more about the environment whilst also being able to sell the honey they produce, to fund more good causes.

The children thoroughly enjoyed this unique learning opportunity. Outdoor learningis a huge benefit and is becoming increasingly popular as it allows children to learn in different ways.

"Being environmentally conscious is a big part in their curriculum and it allowed them to learn in fun way.

Kirsty Wilkie, teacher at Castleton primary school

We only recently got the bee suits but I am so happy they are getting put to good use. It looked like the children were having a great time and learned lots in the process.

Bees are the original entrepreneurs - it's not just about meeting the bees, it's about their life cycle, how they produce the nectar and the entrepreneurial skills needed to sell the honey.
