An initiative to help budding entrepreneurs at New College Lanarkshire realise their business goals has been shortlisted for a sector award.
The 'Market Day' project, an initiative set up by the College's Learner Engagement Team in partnership with Young Enteprise Scotland's Bridge2Business, has been shortlisted for an award at the College Development Network Awards.
The award was shortlisted in the Essential Skills category for demonstrating that the College has embraced the ethos of essential skills in the curriculum, ensuring that students articulate and demonstrate their skills and the potential to utilise these skills in different contexts.
"Market Day allows students with entrepreneurial flair to utilise on-campus market stalls to sell products or services - from bake sales to hair-cuts - utilising their skills learned in the classroom and putting them into practice in a real-life situation.
They are given access to funding to help get with resources for their business idea including stock, equipment and marketing. They also have direct access to information from Bridge2Business to ensure the development and growth of their business for success."
'Market Day' builds on the success of the College's award-winning 'Be Engaged' initiative launched in 2016, which encourages students to get involved in various extra-curricular activities to develop their skillset outside the classroom.
The CDN Awards recognise the talent, skills and achievement of colleges, their staff and their learners, providing a valuable opportunity to recognise and celebrate the innovation taking place in colleges across the country.
The College will go against Forth Valley College and West College Scotland for the award, which will be announced at a special awards dinner on Thursday 21 November at Radisson Blu in Glasgow.
