The former police box at Croll Place is on one of Edinburgh's busiest shopping streets - Leith Walk. The street has the city's highest concentration of independent businesses. The box is a pop-up space with flexible and affordable rental structures and is has a prime location close to a bus stop, gym and all the delightful small businesses that make Leith Walk one of the most vibrant and enterprising parts of the city. At peak times over 300 people pass by Croll Place foot and many more pass on the bus, including masses of tourists on their way to Leith and the Royal Yacht.
Leith has a very mixed demographic and has become one of Scotland's foodie destinations, hosting the annual Scottish Street Food Awards every year at The Pitt. The Police Box aims to support entrepreneurs, creatives, foodies, charities, social enterprises and campaigners get their great ideas out into the world.
The will also assist anyone using the space with support for social media and publicity. The Police Box were featured in the foodies Bite magazine April 2019 and have over 1000 followers on Facebook and Instagram.
The box has water and a small handwashing sink.
There is a power supply.
We have two current foodie regulars (Tipico Sicilian confectionery and Lazy Lettuce vegan burgers). They set up as if they were at a market (as the inside of the box is maintained as a historic building and is not suitable for food prep).
We have a 3 x 3 metre gazebo and a 2m x 1m folding table.
We are currently in the process of applying for a pavement licence so that we can have tables and four chairs.
Any students accessing the market stall through Bridge 2 Business will be covered under Young Enterprise Scotland's public liability insurance.
Alcohol licence - it is fairly straightforward to apply for a temporary alcohol licence from the City of Edinburgh council.
We aim to be affordable, so our starting rate is £35 for a Saturday afternoon (includes utilities and social media publicity) and £35 for all day on a weekday or on a Sunday. We are not as expensive as a market because there is an element of everyone mucking in to help set up and clear up. We can also explore options for sharing a stall. We offer a flexible cancellation policy. There is a reservation fee for booking a date of £15 which is non refundable but can be carried forward if you need to cancel for any reason. There are no waiting lists, everyone gets a space in turn unlike other markets.
Exclusive Discount through Bridge 2 Business !
Students working with Bridge 2 Business can get £10 off of their first two bookings with Leith Walk Police Box, and any students accessing the Bridge 2 Business Market Test Grant can use a proportion of the grant to cover the cost of booking trading space with Leith Walk Police Box.
