All Company Programme pupils are offered to sit the YES Exam which is offered in partnership with the University of Strathclyde Business School and the Hunter Centre for Entrepreneurship. It is a reflective exam where the young people share their experiences of running their business.
We are extremely proud of our exam as it gives pupils the opportunity to demonstrate how their business skills have developed. Gaining a qualification from such a reputable body as the University of Strathclyde is evidence of their business insight and a reward for their hard work throughout the year.
Jordan Allison, a past Company Programme participant at Greenwood Academy found the exam and the whole experience life changing.
'The preparation for the exam took no more than a couple of weeks. We were simply asked to write in detail about our experience so far in the Young Enterprise group and, for such a straightforward exam, the benefits for me were astounding. Passing this exam, coupled with the year-long, highly successful experience I had as part of the Company Programme, come August I was accepted into the University of the West of Scotland to study International Marketing. Four years later, I am nearing the end of my university career and have been accepted to an exchange placement studying Marketing in Lille, France. I really cannot thank Young Enterprise Scotland enough as without this, I would not have had the opportunity to both discover and study something that I now love.'
Over the last 20 years, over 30,000 students have sat the exam – the pass rate has been as high as 98%!
Many of our young people point out that the physical certificate is not the only aspect which has a measurable and positive impact on their career path. Niall Jack, another of our alumni, said that school leavers can, 'only get so far telling potential employers that your best display of teamwork was the local football team.' He maintains that Young Enterprise Scotland filled this gap perfectly. Niall also says, 'whether it's a part-time or full-time job, employers want to see maturity and experience, both of which can be hard to show for an 18 year old! When you can say that you've been the Director of a company and have the exam results to prove it, it really does make an impression. Think of every stereotypical interview question and the Young Enterprise Scotland experience gives you a top quality answer. I know that the Company Programme and the formal exam qualification were a massive boost for me and instrumental in getting a job.'
More detailed information on the YES Exam can be found on Strathclyde Business School's website. We would urge every young person taking part in Company Programme to sit the exam. It adds value to the learning and is unique to Young Enterprise Scotland.
