A project to help more young people from East Renfrewshire get into work celebrated its first anniverary recently with the opening of a brand new Hair & Beauty facility in Barrhead.

"Young Enterprise Scotland, supported by the Council — aims to create opportunities for young people to gain the skills and confidence they need to access secure employment. I had the pleasure of attending the official opening of the YE Scotland Academy at its base in Rouken Glen Park."

"The fantastic facilities and dedicated staff there provide excellent opportunities for young people to take that first step onto the employment ladder. The new Hair & Beauty Academy will enable trainees from across East Renfrewshire to gain hands-on experience as well as SQA accredited qualifications."

"The Scottish Government is working hard to combat youth unemployment through record investment in apprenticeships and training. Figures from Skills Development Scotland show that over 77,000 modern apprenticeship places have been created over the past three years, with a commitment from the Scottish government to increase the number of places available each year from 25,000 to 30,000 by 2020. This is good news not just for Scotland’s young people, but also for businesses who will benefit from a more skilled and confident workforce."

I was delighted to attend the official opening of Young Enterprise Scotland’s new Hair and Beauty salon in my constituency. In a very short space of time it is proving itself to be a valuable asset within the community, having already created nine new jobs for young people. It was great to speak to the newest recruits and I found their enthusiasm infectious. There was a real buzz of excitement at the new salon in Barrhead as everyone looked forward to the future. I wish those involved every success.

The Young Enterprise Scotland team were a key partner in delivering the Water Works Gardens, a Grow Wild Project funded by Big Lottery and Kew Gardens. The gardens were developed on the site of an abandoned sewage works, transforming concrete tanks into wildflower meadows.

YE Scotland were excellent to work with, bringing high quality horticultural experience to the project as well as fresh ideas and enthusiasm. YE Scotland trainees and staff worked closely with 100 High School pupils to sow, nurture and plant out over 16,000 wild flower plug plants. These plants bloomed in spectacular style over the summer, making a fitting testimony to the efforts and skills of the Young Enterprise Scotland team.

Through the Young Enterprise Scotland involvement with SCVO, we have created three positions for young people on Community Jobs Scotland. YE Scotland sustained two of these positions beyond the 6 months and now employ two of the young men on 2 year contracts, the other young man is still on CJS and potentially will be retained.

It has been excellent to see how all have progressed and developed. In particular it is great to see that they are very much part of the set up within YE Scotland and have the confidence to continue to develop in their roles.

As a Business Adviser working with Community Enterprise in Scotland, I have delivered two assignments under the Scottish Governments Just Enterprise Programme with YE Scotland. The first was because the organisation was planning to open their new Centre at Rouken Glen; the second with Geoff Leask, as Young Enterprise Scotland was planning the introduction of their Bridge 2 Business programme.

I find YE Scotland to be an innovative and forward-thinking organisation, open to constructive input and staffed by very capable practitioners at all levels. Testament to their thorough planning process was the successful launch of both new businesses within a 6-month period – a first-class achievement by any standards.
